Bilingual teaching, mixed-age classes

The Hongwen Montessori Academy has adopted the small-class, bilingual teaching model. Curriculum content is delivered by a formidable team comprising both Chinese and foreign faculty. With its philosophy of “Student-Centered, Integration of East and West, Elite Education”, the Hongwen Montessori Academy seeks to ensure that every child is well cared for and becomes a lifelong learner equipped with confidence, independence, love and a sense of responsibility.

Montessori Course

The Montessori classroom is a space that has been painstakingly planned. A varied collection of teaching aids is used to attract the child’s attention. Under the guidance of a professional teacher, the child decides on tasks within his/her area of interest, and develops independence, hand-eye coordination, focus, and a sense of order and logic through exploration and hands-on activities. The teacher is more like a careful observer who provides the child with encouragement, demonstration and guidance. In a mixed-age environment, children can help each other, learn, and communicate, developing strong social skills and powers of expression in the process.

Bilingual Environment

The bilingual nursery school offers a foundation course based on the “Guidelines for the Learning and Development of Children Aged 3-6 Years”. The course offering is supplemented by a variety of courses in art, music, and sports. The International Course class is taught in a small-class, bilingual environment that provides a happy and immersive bilingual environment for young children. This way, children at a critical stage of life for language development can easily learn both Chinese and English, and undergo all-round development.

Small-class teaching

Targeted at young children under the age of 3. Children of this age are interested in everything around them. Within the warm and orderly environment of the school, and under the care and guidance of professional and caring teachers, young children carry out activities and classes suitable for their age group. These activities and classes help to promote the child’s cognitive development and to strengthen his/her hand-eye coordination. The aim here is to help the child grow his/her ability to care for himself/herself and develop a sense of independence. At the same time, we also attach great importance to the development of the child’s language abilities at this stage: work is performed to increase his/her vocabulary as part of efforts to train his/her expression and comprehension capabilities.

Large-class teaching

Large-class teaching is an extension and continuation of the small class. This is conducted in a mixed-age environment with children aged 3 to 6. Here, teaching is based on “hands-on activity” on the part of the child, and on a learning shift from the concrete to the more abstract. For instance, figurative teaching aids are used in the teaching of mathematics and movable letters, in the teaching of language, while specially-designed cylinders are used with children for them to experience differences in length, size and weight. This way, the child experiences and form experiences through the act of exploration, with the teacher being simply a demonstrator and guide. This type of learning process helps the lay the foundation for lifelong learning by fostering the child’s independence and self-confidence and inculcating a spirit of active learning. The areas covered by large-class teaching include: mathematics, language, day-to-day life exercises, sensory development, history, geography, science, music and rhythm, and arts and crafts.

The unity of Knowledge and Action: all-round development

In the large-class setting, the “Welcome to Our World” series created by National Geographic is used. The text is an excellent example of the National Geographic learning approach, which is “Bringing the world into the classroom, and connecting the classroom to life”. The beautiful photos within deliver to the child real-world experiences that in turn inspire initiative. Not only is the child able to grow his/her vocabulary and gain a better understanding cultures and music from around the world, he/she is also able to develop scientific knowledge and logical thinking skills. Individual schools also offer different feature classes such as Chinese studies, specialty music programs, physical education, cookery, and art, enhancing the child’s aesthetic, artistic and physical development.
