The “Hongwen School” is a brand created by the Far East Horizon Education that delivers education at the compulsory education stage through to senior high. It brings together overseas education systems with traditional Chinese education, and curriculum content is delivered at a level that is comparable to top international standards. The result: globalized talents who are equipped with the best of both East and West. The focus here is on the cultivation of the student’s interests, core literacies and capacity for innovative thinking, with the national curriculum delivered using innovative teaching methods. The development of the school is based on the concept of “promotion of the scientific spirit and the cultivation of excellent qualities”, and the school’s motto is “Diligence, Kindness, Moderation, Perseverance, and Creativity”.
Innovative teaching methods are used with the national curriculum. Thematic teaching is used with the humanities subjects, and research is conducted to integrate interdisciplinary teaching methods into the curriculum. At the same time, the introduction of modern AR teaching methods has enriched classroom teaching.
In the teaching of science and mathematics, efforts have been made to strengthen the application of real-life experiences and practical operation as well as to shift from lecture-based teaching to more practical and experiential platform learning. Another shift in the STEM curriculum is the shift from a focus on test-taking to the cultivation of innovation capabilities with the student’s scientific literacy and hands-on practical ability being nurtured in the process.
Art is integrated into aesthetic education, with particular attention paid to the aesthetic guidance of students in art education. Appreciation and the cultivation of the individual are combined with classroom teaching for the cultivation of good taste in the student over the course of art learning. The aim of the physical education curriculum is to improve students’ physique and skills. Special attention is paid to the transmission and training of the spirit of sportsmanship, with character training integrated into each class and every training activity.
The focus here is on the strengthening of the student’s English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and the implementation of bilingual teaching across various disciplines. Bilingual teaching in music, art, sports, science, and computer science begins from the first year of studies, with a gradual transition to bilingual teaching in the natural sciences. This lays a strong foundation for students considering international-curriculum programs at the senior-high level and for the cultivation of globalized talents.
The development of inquiry-based courses for the exploration of knowledge and skills related to technologies: Lego and 3D Smart Brush at the elementary-school level, and computer programming, 3D printing, and robotics at the high-school level.
Research courses and winter/summer camp programs are developed to enable students to systematically accept knowledge through experience and to shift from passive acceptance into active absorption. This way, students will be able to explore and learn through practice, and learn and reflect even whilst on travels.
